At SLVC Clinic, we offer advanced treatment options for uterine fibroids, including Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE), a minimally invasive procedure designed to provide effective relief from symptoms while preserving the uterus.
Uterine fibroids, non-cancerous growths in the uterus, can cause discomfort and affect reproductive health. At SLVC Clinic, we offer Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE), a non-surgical and highly effective procedure.
Here’s how Uterine Fibroid Embolization Works:
At SLVC Clinic, we specialize in Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE), offering a non-surgical solution to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life for women suffering from uterine fibroids.
During UFE, a specially trained interventional radiologist inserts a thin, flexible tube (catheter) into a blood vessel, usually through a small incision in the groin. The catheter is guided under X-ray imaging to the arteries that supply blood to the uterus and fibroids.
Once the catheter is in place, small particles (usually made of plastic or gelatin) are injected through the catheter into the arteries that feed the fibroids. These particles block the blood flow to the fibroids, depriving them of oxygen and nutrients.
With the blood supply cut off, the fibroids gradually shrink in size over several months. As the fibroids shrink, symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, frequent urination, and abdominal bloating typically improve or resolve.
UFE is performed under local anesthesia and sedation, rather than general anesthesia, which can shorten recovery time. Most patients are able to return home the same day or after an overnight stay. Recovery typically involves mild discomfort and cramping, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.
Benefits of Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)
At SLVC Clinic, our team led by Dr. Sagar Satpute ensures personalized care and support throughout your UFE treatment.
Non-Surgical: UFE is a non-surgical alternative to hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus) and myomectomy (surgical removal of fibroids), preserving the uterus and its function.
Effective Symptom Relief: It provides effective relief from symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure.
Shorter Recovery: Recovery time is usually shorter compared to traditional surgery, with many women returning to normal activities within a week.
Is Uterine Fibroid Embolization painful?
UFE is generally well-tolerated. Patients may experience mild discomfort or cramping after the procedure, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.
How long does it take to recover from UFE?
Recovery time varies from person to person, but many women are able to resume normal activities within a few days to a week after UFE. Rest and light activity are recommended during this time.
Will my fibroids come back after UFE?
UFE is effective in shrinking existing fibroids. While new fibroids can develop over time, the majority of women experience long-term relief from their symptoms.
How do I know if UFE is right for me?
The suitability of UFE depends on factors such as the size and location of your fibroids, your symptoms, and your overall health. A consultation with our experienced team can help determine if UFE is the best treatment option for you.
What happens during the UFE procedure?
During UFE, you'll receive local anesthesia and possibly sedation to keep you comfortable. A small incision is made in the groin area to access the arteries supplying blood to the fibroids. The procedure is guided by imaging techniques for precision.
