- At SLVC Clinic, we specialize in Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE), offering a non-surgical solution to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life for women suffering from uterine fibroids.
- During UFE, a specially trained interventional radiologist inserts a thin, flexible tube (catheter) into a blood vessel, usually through a small incision in the groin. The catheter is guided under X-ray imaging to the arteries that supply blood to the uterus and fibroids.
- Once the catheter is in place, small particles (usually made of plastic or gelatin) are injected through the catheter into the arteries that feed the fibroids. These particles block the blood flow to the fibroids, depriving them of oxygen and nutrients.
- With the blood supply cut off, the fibroids gradually shrink in size over several months. As the fibroids shrink, symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, frequent urination, and abdominal bloating typically improve or resolve.
- UFE is performed under local anesthesia and sedation, rather than general anesthesia, which can shorten recovery time. Most patients are able to return home the same day or after an overnight stay. Recovery typically involves mild discomfort and cramping, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.
