The liver is unique because it gets blood from two sources: the hepatic artery and the portal vein. While healthy liver cells feed mostly from the portal vein, liver tumors feed almost exclusively from the hepatic artery.
How TACE Works: The endovascular specialist inserts a thin catheter into the artery (usually via the wrist or groin) and navigates it directly to the tumor’s blood supply.
Who is it for?
TACE is primarily used for Hepatocellular Carcinoma (Primary Liver Cancer) and certain types of metastatic liver tumors when surgery is not an option.
